Build an app with AI, or have it built?
With AI tools like Lovable, Bolt and Replit you make an app in minutes, just by typing what you want. It really works. But an app on your screen is not yet an app in the App Store, with real customers and their data. Here is what AI does well, where it stops and how to choose.

Short answer
- Testing or showing your idea
- AI is fine
- A tool for you or your team
- AI can be enough
- An app in the App Store
- Hard without a developer
- Customer data or payments
- Have a developer check it
Can ChatGPT make an app?
Yes and no. ChatGPT and other AI chatbots write code if you ask. But you have to put that code together, test it and get it online yourself. Without programming experience, that is hard.
That is why there are AI app builders. You describe your app in plain words and see it straight away. Well-known examples:
- Lovable and Bolt: mostly websites and web apps.
- Replit: web apps, and apps for your phone too.
- Rork: apps for iPhone and Android.
You can try them for free. A paid plan usually costs 20 to 25 dollars a month. The more you build and change, the more you pay.
What AI is good at
For some things an AI app builder really is the best choice. For example:
- quickly making a first version to show your idea;
- finding out what you actually want, before you spend money;
- a simple tool for you or your team, without customer data;
- a simple web page with a form.
If something goes wrong, little is lost. That is exactly the difference with an app for real customers.
Where it stops
An app for real customers has to do more than work on your screen. This is where many people get stuck.
-
Getting into the App Store
Apple rejects apps that are little more than a website in an app wrapper (guideline 4.2). So a web app from an AI builder won't simply get in. You also need your own developer account: 99 dollars a year.
-
Store rules
If you use your app for your business, Apple shows your address, phone number and email in the EU App Store. On Google Play, an app from a new personal account must first be tested for 14 days by at least 12 testers.
-
Security
In 2025 researchers checked 1,645 apps made with Lovable. In 170 of them, strangers could see data such as email addresses and payments. Veracode tested AI models: in 45% of the tasks they wrote code with a security flaw.
-
Privacy and the GDPR
If you store customers' names, email addresses or payments, you are responsible under the GDPR. You need to know where that data is and who can reach it. An AI builder doesn't arrange that for you.
-
When it goes wrong
In July 2025 Replit's AI wiped a user's database, after being told not to change anything. Replit added safeguards afterwards. But without a developer, you often don't know what went wrong or how to fix it.
-
Maintenance and growth
New versions of iOS and Android come out every year, and your app has to keep up. The bigger your app gets, the more often one change breaks something else. And every change through AI costs credits again.
How to choose
AI is enough
- You want to show your idea quickly.
- It is a tool for you or your team.
- No customer data or payments go into it.
- It is fine if it breaks now and then.
Hire a developer
- Your app needs to be in the App Store or Google Play.
- Customers log in, pay or enter personal details.
- Your business will depend on it.
- You want someone to be responsible if it goes wrong.
Or combine them
- Make a first version with AI, so you see what you want.
- Bring it to your first call with a developer. It saves a lot of explaining.
- Then have the part your customers will really use built properly.
How we do it
With us, too, you see your app before anything is built: first a clickable design on your own phone. Only then do you decide whether to have it built, at a fixed price.
See it first, then decide.
You don't have to build a complete app straight away. Start with a design, and pay for the build per demo.

App design
Your app's main screens, clickable on your own phone. So you know exactly what you'll get before you decide. If you don't like the design after two rounds of changes, you get your money back. Test it with users or show it to investors. If we build the app within six months, we deduct the design from the price.
-
Pay per demo
Apps, web apps and MVPs are paid per demo: after the demo of each part, you pay for that part. So you only pay for what you've seen. You may stop after any demo, and you take the code with you.
All prices exclude VAT.
Questions about building apps with AI
Question not listed? Email info@swivra.nl
Can ChatGPT make an app?
ChatGPT can write code, but it doesn't put a complete app online for you. You have to put the code together, test it and publish it yourself. An AI app builder such as Lovable, Bolt, Replit or Rork makes that easier, because it also runs the app.
What does it cost to build an app with AI?
You can start for free. A paid plan usually costs 20 to 25 dollars a month, and more if you build or change a lot. For the App Store and Google Play you pay Apple 99 dollars a year and Google a one-off 25 dollars.
Can I put an AI-made app in the App Store?
Sometimes. Apple doesn't reject an app because AI made it, but it does if the app is little more than a website (guideline 4.2). You need your own developer account, and Apple reviews every app and every update.
Is an AI-made app secure?
Not by itself. According to Veracode, AI wrote code with a security flaw in 45% of the test tasks. If customer data or payments go into your app, have someone who knows what they are doing check it before you go live.
Can a developer carry on with what I made with AI?
Sometimes. Most AI builders let you download the code. Whether building on it is wise, or starting again with your version as an example, a developer can only say after looking at the code.
